Many thanks to Christopher Ballantine at the School of Music, University of KwaZulu-Natal for allowing me to photograph his collection. Search and listen to the Ballantine Collection at SAMAP.

Some of the earliest recordings by Chris McGregor and the legendary Blue Notes, who's line up at this time possibly included: McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Nick Moyake, Ronnie Beer, Christopher Columbus Ngukane, Martin Mgijima and Monty Weber.

Ndiyeke Mra is the original title for Dudu Pukwana's tribute — "Mra" — to the legendary band leader Christopher 'Columbus' Ngcukana. Both Pukwana and Nick Moyake played together for the first time in Ngcukana's PE band the Rhythm Down Beat in the late 1950s. Mra was a regular favorite of the Blue Notes and their future incarnation, the Brotherhood of Breath and was also recorded by Hugh Masekela. "Mra" of "Bra" are slang terms that can mean "brother" but are also accolades or signs of respect when used as a prefix before a name.
